ZHENGZHOU, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Central China's Henan Province has built and renovated more than 2 million toilets last year as part of nationwide efforts to spruce up public toilets, the provincial government announced Wednesday.

More than 3,200 public toilets have been built in urban areas and 5,300 in rural areas, while 1,700 toilets were built for tourists, covering up to 500 tourists sites in the province. More than 2 million household toilets in rural areas were also renovated, local authorities said.

More than 300 million yuan (43.9 million U.S. dollars) was allocated from the provincial government on the construction and renovation of the toilets.

China's "toilet revolution" began in 2015 to make the facilities cleaner and better regulated. Nationwide, around 64,000 toilets will be built or improved at tourist destinations by 2020.
