MEXICO CITY, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Mexican clubs could return to the Copa Libertadores in the near future, the head of the country's top football division said on Friday.

The Liga MX - as the competition is known - put its association with South America's premier club tournament on hold two years ago because of scheduling concerns.

But Liga MX president Enrique Bonilla said he planned to meet with South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) chief Alejandro Dominguez in the coming weeks to discuss the return of Mexican teams.

"Being able to compete in this tournament will always be attractive, if the conditions are right," Bonilla told reporters. "First, we have to be invited and, second, we have to make sure that it does not affect the schedule of our own league."

Despite belonging to the CONCACAF confederation, Mexican clubs participated in the Copa Libertadores from 1998 to 2016.

No Mexican side has ever won the competition. Cruz Azul, Guadalajara and Tigres were losing finalists in 2001, 2010 and 2015, respectively.
