JINAN, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- A spotted deer gifted from Taiwan to the Chinese mainland gave birth to a fawn at a national park in eastern China's Shandong Province on Thursday morning.
It is the eighth time that the deer, Dian Dian, has given birth since she was moved from Taiwan to the Liugongdao National Forest Park in the city of Weihai in 2011.
The female fawn tried to stand up six minutes after its birth and was able to suckle from her mother within four hours. Both the mother and fawn are healthy and were introduced to the public on Friday, staff from the park said.
A pair of sika deer, Fan Xing and Dian Dian, arrived at the park in April 2011 as gifts from Taiwan. They were regarded as "goodwill messengers" from across the Taiwan Strait.
