RIGA, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Latvia, a country known for its generally mild climate, has just seen a few exceptionally hot weeks, which combined with persistently dry weather has triggered a series of wildfires, damaged crops and caused health issues to people.

Although the heatwave which started in mid-July has been making quite a few headlines and a number of hot temperature records have been set for particular dates in the course of the past weeks, meteorologist Toms Bricis says that this has been neither the longest nor the hottest heatwave ever registered in Latvia.

The hottest weather in Latvia this summer was registered in the central Latvian town of Bauska where the temperature hit 33.3 degrees Celsius on July 31. This, however, was still below 37.8 degrees recorded in the summer of 2014 in Latvia's northwestern seaside city Ventspils.
