NEW YORK, May 9 (Xinhua) -- New York police on Thursday arrested seven pro-Palestinian demonstrators on the campus of Brooklyn College, part of the City University of New York (CUNY), according to media reports on Friday.
The police detained a total of 14 protesters as they tried to clean tents on the campus in Flatbush and Midwood neighborhoods, with seven issued summonses for lower-level offenses.
Clashes erupted between protesters and the police on Thursday afternoon with one man tasered.
The protesters made demands to the college and the CUNY on disclosing and divesting, boycotting, solidarity and demilitarizing.
"Brooklyn College respects the right to protest while also adhering to strict rules meant to ensure the safe operation of our University," said Richard Pietras, a spokesperson for Brooklyn College.
Brooklyn College is scheduled to be closed at 2:00 p.m. Friday and classes will be remote for the rest of the day with the campus to be re-opened on Saturday, according to a notice on the website of the college.
The arrests took place one day after New York police arrested nearly 80 protesters from Columbia University's Morningside Heights campus in Manhattan. ■
